SA on the podium in 2007 ROTAX World Final

01.11.2007

Canada's Pier-Luc Ouellette scored the biggest win of his career when he waltzed to an easy win in the DD2 Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals at Al Ain today but there was heartache for South African hopeful Kyle Lawrence

Having started from 25th place after being heaved off the track on the last lap of the Pre-Final, he put in a determined charge to claim a superb, and fighting ninth.

David Perel starred in the Senior Max Challenge final and ran as high as second before a slight error saw him go wide and in a flash he was down to 8th. He managed to recover to sixth, a performance that left race engineer Claudio Piazza-Musso impressed.

At the front there was drama all the way as last year's winner Ricardo Romkema was forced wide at the final corner by Russell Benjy who took the win while Michael Simpson claimed third.

Caleb Williams starred in the Junior Final and a brilliant drive and led from laps 4 to 11 before being passed and then dropping a few more positions. By the last lap he was up to second but was barged out of the way at the second last corner by Fujie Ryuya (Japan) and dropped to third while the win went to Estonian Kevin Korjus

There was a big cheer for the SA team as they ended the competition second behind Canada in the Nations Cup with Australia taking the bronze medal.
