RENTAL KARTING

FREEZING WEATHER CAUSES PAIN!

When water freezes and becomes ice, it expands. Like most laws of nature a great deal of force is available to burst pipes, crack engine blocks and even break kart cylinders, radiators, etc.

How to avoid damage:

  • Drain the water at the end of the day. Tip: put radiator cap in tool box so as not to forget to fill it at your next outing!
  • Follow the instructions in the ROTAX handbook (that orange document that comes with the engine but few ever read) and add anti freeze to your water. Tip: this is forbidden in CIK events so rather use water until a letter from ROTAX clarifying that this does not apply to South Africa is published. Unfortunately one of the many karting legal experts might try to protest you in the interim.
Can one repair a cracked cylinder?

Yes, if the crack is welded (by and expert!) one can normally diamond hone the cylinder to correct distortion caused by weld and use it successfully. Repairs of this nature are allowed in the regulations for ROTAX classes.
