In the hotly contested 60cc GP Junior class it was Toyota Castrol Development team member Morgan McColl who won overall after winning the first two heats and taking fourth in the final event.

The first two races saw nail-biting finishes with three karts crossing the line abreast. Runner-up for the day was Head2Head racing’s Aston Hare who won the final race. Third was Capetonian Marco Busi with fellow Capetonian Luke Herring just missing the podium. Completing the top six were Brad du Plessis and Richard Upton.

Mini-Max produced some awesome racing but at the end it was Toyota Castrol Development team member Axcil Jefferies (Birel) who won all three races thanks to some intelligent driving. Ricky Hill (CRG) was runner-up thanks to a second place in the opening race. Jason Georgiou (TonyKart) has been one of the finds of the season and took third despite an unlucky final heat. Next up was Roman de Beer (Castrol/Birel) with Jordan Pepper salvaging fifth on his Pepson/Castrol Birel despite being shoved off the track in the opening race as Ryan Frost claimed sixth.

In Junior Max Trent Williams (PCR) had everything his own way, but the big surprise was that James Temple (Sportstar PCR) was second, a mere five weeks after his bone-breaking accident at Polokwane. Fernando de Aroujo brought his CRG home to third ahead of Richard Napier (CRG) with Jeffrey Kruger and fellow PCR pilot Meghann Boschoff claiming the other important positions.

Max Challenge saw Arnold Neveling in devastating form as he took his PCR to victory in each race. Kevin de Wit was consistent in his CRG and ended the day as runner-up ahead of Devin Robertson (Big Boss CRG). Birel driver Mathew Hodges battled to fourth on a kart that just wasn’t doing anything to his liking as Guy Botterill (PCR) was fifth ahead of Ralph Odendaal (CRG) who had an engine problem.

Driving a CRG Ralph Odendaal edged out PCR driver Arnold Neveling after a thrilling DD2 contest. Odendaal won the opening two races but his motor went sick in the third and Neveling took the win as Odendaal salvaged fourth which saw the pair end the day on equal points and Odendaal take the win as he had more wins. Kyle Lawrence (Birel) was third ahead of Justin Allison (CRG) and the Frost Brothers Christopher (Birel) and Gavin (Sodi).

Trent Williams (PCR) was in superb form as he won all three heats in the Junior Rok class to take the day with 13 points over first round winner Vicki Kemp (Birel) from Port Elizabeth. Caleb Williams (Head2Head PCR) had a poor result in the opening race but finished second in the other two races to bag the bronze medal. Ian Young (Birel) was third in the opening race on his way to fourth overall ahead of Chad van Beurden (Birel) and PCR mounted Mitchell Licen who was in the GP Junior class last season.

The Super Rok class had the crowd on its feet and in a nail biting finish Michael Stephen (Engen/VW/TonyKart) emerged as the winner despite only winning one race. Second was Gennaro Bonafede (Asiawing/Birel) who won the last two races but accident damage from a typically robust first corner saw him finish well down the order in the opening race. Third went to on form lady racer Fabienne Lanz (PCR) as Rory Atkinson salvaged fourth after a promising start to the weekend. Incredibly Atkinson (Castrol/Birel) and Mike van Niekerk (TonyKart) posted identical times in qualifying and pole went to Atkinson as his second fastest lap was a tad quicker than van Niekerk’s. Simon Moss (VW/Engen/TonyKart) was fifth as Zimbabwean Gerard Peters (Petro-Oil Zim/Birel) rounded off the top six.

Round 3 of the Engen Supa Karts national championship takes place at Idube, a demanding track just outside Pietermaritzburg on 11 August.
