The second round of the Northern Regions
Championships took place in sweltering conditions at Vereeniging
on Saturday.
In the 60cc GP Junior class Toyota's
Morgan McColl started the ball rolling by qualifying in
pole position and then he won two of the three thrilling
races to take a well deserved first overall win ahead
of reigning champion Aston Hare who won the opening race
ahead of McColl.
Jordan Pepper (Birel) started the first
Rotax powered Mini-Max race from pole, but after leading
most of the way he dropped down the order after a bit
of argy-bargy halfway round the final lap. That left Ricky
Hill (CRG) to take the win. Race two saw Toyota's Axcil
Jefferies win while the third race went to Sean Frost
(Birel) who emerged as the overall winner.
Ralph Odendaal (CRG) took a surprise
Max Challenge win ahead of PCR Arnold Neveling who won
the opening race and third went to Kevin De Wit (CRG).
Odendaal made it a double when he walked
the Rotax DD2 class ahead of Justin Allison and Birel
driver Kyle Lawrence.
Trent Williams (PCR) took the Junior
Rok class ahead of Birel's Ian Young who won the final
race while Olivier Calkoen (Birel) took third.
Rory Atkinson (Birel) won the hotly contested
Super class ahead of Gennaro Bonafede (Asiawing/Birel)
while Toyota's development racer, Tasmin Pepper (Birel)
made her debut in the Super Rok class and put in a faultless
performance to win the final race by a massive 2.6 seconds
which put her third in the overall standings.
Rob Bakewell dominated the 125 Gearbox
class, winning the day ahead of Clint Jones and Garry
Rogers.
Gary Marais won the Max 175 class from
Michael Hallsworth and Cyril Atkinson and Liam Pienaar
took the Cadet class honours.
Round three of the Northern Regions Championship
takes place on 31 March at the Bridgestone/Zwartkops track
just outside Pretoria.
