With two seasons of European competition
behind him, Arnold Neveling made a mockery of the opposition
in the Max Challenge class. He took his PCR to very easy
wins in all three heats to win ahead of Devin Robertson
(CRG) and Toyota’s Tasmin Pepper (Birel).
Aboard a CRG, Durban’s Ralph Odendaal
made the DD2 class his own, putting in three faultless
performances on his way to winning the day ahead of Kyle
Lawrence (Birel) and Christopher Frost (CRG).
CRG driver Ritchie Napier walked the
Junior Max class to end the day eight points clear of
Chad van Beurden (Birel) and David Smith who was aboard
a new Sodi chassis.
Toyota’s Axcil Jefferies scored
a full house of wins in the fiercely contested Rotax Mini-Max
class in round one of the Northern Regions Kart Championship
at Zwartkops on Saturday.
Driving a Birel chassis, the 12 year-old
member of the Toyota Development Kart team looked in control
from the start of heat one, although he was under pressure
from Ricky Hill (CRG) in the final heat. Third place in
the class went to young Jordan Pepper, also aboard a Castrol
supported Birel.
Gary Marais also scored a full house
of wins to win the Max 175 class for PCR with Cyril Atkinson
(Birel) and John van Wyk completing the top three.
At the end of the day, Michael Taylor
was one point clear of his cousin Bradley Taylor and took
the 60cc GP Junior honours as reigning champion Aston
Hare was third after a late decision to race in the class.
Olivier Calkoen (Birel) claimed the hotly
contested ROK Junior class with a full house of wins as
PCR driver Caleb Williams was runner-up, just one point
clear of Ian Young (Castrol Birel).
Rory Atkinson (Castrol Birel) won the
Super ROK class, wining all three races to edge out Gennaro
Bonafede driving the Asia-Wing sponsored version. Lourens
Dunn (CRG) did well to hang onto third place.
Clint Jones won a hard fought 125 GP
encounter, ending the day one point clear of Rob Bakewell
while Alan Thompson took the bronze medal.
