South African Rotax Max Challenge - Vereeniging

16.06.2008

Kevin De Wit

Vereeniging’s recently repaired Bridgestone Adrenalin Raceway hosted an enthralling round of the South African Rotax Max Challenge on Saturday.

It was one of those meetings that had everything from close racing to controversy but at the end of the day there were no real surprises in the results.

van der Linde won Mini Max

Kelvin van der Linde was on top of the Mini-Max class as he won the Pre-Final and Final to give CRG the verdict ahead of a hungry Birel pack lead by Dewald Brummer, Ryan Frost, Liam Venter and Nicholas Surguladze as PCR mounted Bevan Williams grabbed sixth.

Jnr Max belonged to Jeffries

Junior Max belonged to Castrol Toyota’s Axcil Jefferies who won each race aboard his Birel with Sam Tingle (Sodi) following him across the line each time. Third place belonged to the ever improving Eckhardt Briedenhann (CRG) who ended the day with two third places.

Eddie le Roux (CRG) pipped Naomi Schiff (Tonykart) for fourth by two points Ricky Hill (Rigidek CRG) went well, but was only sixth after being penalised for a jump start.

Matthew Hodges

Max Challenge was awesome. At the end of the day it was Birel driver Duke Ridgway who won with Kevin de Wit taking the runner-up slot for CRG as Fabienne Lanz (PCR) got the bronze medal.

Fourth went to Chad van Beurden (Birel) just ahead of Devin Robertson (Sodi) and Rory Atkinson (Birel) got sixth despite being tied on 71 points with Richard Napier.

Neveling made a welcome return

Talented Arnold Neveling made a welcome return to the South African scene and walked the DD2 class for CRG, his task made much easier after the withdrawal of fellow CRG racer Ralph Odendaal with sore ribs.

Runner-up was Birel’s Ian Young. Not the fast but erratic, happy-go-lucky Ian we all know, but this is the new improved consistently fast version. Third went to Trent Williams (Sodi) with PCR driver Justin Allison only one point behind. Rounding off the top six were Ronnie Baptista (CRG) and DD2 Masters contenders George dos Ramos (Birel) who was tied on points with Gary Marais (CRG). Third in the Masters class was Rocky Gush on his familiar CRG.
