Round three of the Northern Regions Rotax Max Challenge broke new ground as it was the first kart meeting to be held on a Sunday for over a decade. Despite the mid-winter chill, the Zwartkops event attracted the biggest entry seen in karting for a long time.

The Max challenge races with a 25 strong field provided action packed racing. After an entertaining final the Max Challenge honours went to Chad van Beurden. He also won the pre-final to win the day. However, as he usually competes in the KZN Rotax Max series he wasn’t eligible for points in the series from this event.

Arnold Neveling, one of South Africa’s bright young stars, has been turning heads racing Formula Renault in Europe returned to Max racing and took top points for the day. Sean Frost (Birel) went home with second place as TonyKart driver Jason Georgiou got third on the strength of a good pre-final.

Rory Atkinson was fourth ahead of the least experienced driver in the pack Devon Tame. Last year’s national champion, Kevin de Wit, did well to claim sixth considering he hasn’t done much racing so far this season.

There was no stopping reigning champion Sheldon van der Linde as he walked the 60cc GP Junior class, but there was a huge scrap behind him.

Aedan van Vuuren and Bradley Liebenberg were tied on points for second place as Daygin Prescott and Keagan Masters were also tied on points in their battle for fourth place while Liam Pienaar was only a point behind them and completed the top six.

Dewald Brummer was on top form as, after a few hectic tussles, he took his Birel to fairly comfortable victories in the Mini Max pre-final and final. Second was the Castrol Toyota Development Team leader Morgan McColl with CRG mounted Raoul Hyman grabbing the final podium position.

Amanda du Plessis finished a well deserved second in the prefinal and was rewarded with fourth overall as Nathan Parkins showed good pace but was a bit unlucky to end the day in fifth place. Newcomer Adam Burns enjoyed a steady day to claim sixth place.

Birel driver Liam Venter was a tad lucky as he took the Junior Max honours after pre-final winner Naomi Schiff retired when the exhaust on her TonyKart came adrift while she was leading the 20-lap final. That left CRG mounted Kelvin van der Linde to take the runner-up trophy from Roman de Beer who was one point clear of Aston Hare.

A good tussle saw Raoul Owens and Ricky Hill tied on points for fifth place with Sebastian Mafuna rounding off the top six.

Red Bull’s Caleb Williams was made to work hard for the DD2 win, but it was fellow CRG driver Nicholas Verheul who surprised friend and foe by winning the pre-final. An exited Nic commented after the race that ‘it was the classic case of two dogs fighting over a bone and the third one running away with it!’ He then backed this up with third place in the final to end the day as runner-up. Bloemfontein’s Justin Allison was tied on points with Verheul and was placed third in the overall results.

Ian Young’s second place in the pre-final helped him overcome a frustrating final and he went home with fourth place. Heading the chasing pack was Laurent Calkoen while George dos Ramos (leading DD2 masters class) and relative newcomer Jarryd du Preez were tied on points for sixth.
